Advanced Dog Training Techniques- The Command List

Here is the command list as a part of advanced dog training techniques. Commands are techniques that are applied to the dog to elicit the desired behavior. The dog command are of two types-

You can mix up both types of commands.

Hand Signal

Verbal commands are not always suitable for dogs. During hunting hand signal works better. Dogs can accept hand signals when they are trained properly.

To teach the hand signal it is a good idea to use your hand with every verbal signal. Your dog has to build up a habit of looking at you more often. The dog usually takes more time to learn the hand signals.

Verbal Command

I think verbal commands are more effective. The dog doesn’t need to look at you. To give a verbal command you need not be the primary master of the dog. If the dog doesn’t hear the sound in a similar tone it may not respond sometimes.

Basic Command List:

  • Name
  • Sit Down
  • Stand
  • Calm
  • Stay
  • Settle
  • Ask For Permission

Advanced Command List:

  • Walk Faster
  • Walk Slower
  • Leave It
  • Hold It
  • Find it
  • Quiet
  • Turn Right
  • Turn left
  • Walk backward
  • Watch me etc

There are two more important things- name recognition and marker word. The first and foremost duty is to teach the name to the dog. You can give instructions by calling the name. When the dog follows your command correctly you can say something to motivate it. When it is can’t follow it you can use something different as a demotivation. These are called marker words.

Details About Commands

Come: It is not so easy to teach. You can ready a treat for the dog and call it to come. Gradually it will understand the command.

No: Don’t give any treat to teach no. Your facial expression and denial of getting something with the tone know will teach the dog.

Sit: Never try to force the dog to teach the command, it will not work. Go towards the dog make eye contact and lean over a bit.

Down: You can teach the command by keeping the dog sit on the ground and keep the treat down. Don’t force it.

Leave It: Leave it is an easy command to teach. You can give a treat that your dog doesn’t like much. And teach her to leave it.

Heel: Say heel and step forward. If the dog follows your command give a reward. It will learn it gradually.

Wait and Okay: These two commands come together. ‘Wait’ is used to stop the dog from a certain action and then ‘Okay’ to start the action.

Release: Keep the toy in your one hand when the other part is in the mouth of the dog. Then say release to relax the mouth.

Take It: This is one of the easiest commands. You can say the dog takes it by placing something in front of its mouth.

Bring It: This is a combination of two commands, ‘take it’ and ‘come’. The dog can easily understand and cope up with the command.

Eliminate: You need to focus on timing. Teach the dog to eliminate in the bathroom. When the timing is perfect it will gradually learn when and where to eliminate.

Spin: Hold a treat above the pup and spin it around and teach it the command. It will learn very easily.

Shake: Teach the shake command combining verbal and physical guidance. When the dog sits you can teach the command.

Rollover: Using a treat in front of the dog you can teach it to roll over from left to right and right to left.

Beg: Beg is one of the easiest dog training techniques. Use the treat vertically with respect to the dog’s position and teach it to beg.

Catch: Most of the dog automatically learn the command ‘catch’. You can teach manually by using a treat in front of the dog.  It will nib the treat up in the air.

Count: Use verbal command to teach barking count. Teach the dog to bark for a certain number of an object by using command counting.

Bow: Teach the dog to bow down its body using proper body guidance. The ‘down’ work teach the bow command.

Crawl: It is not a tough command to teach. It is a combination of ‘down’ and ‘come’ commands.

Pay Attention: We already told you that you should teach the dog a name. Whenever you call the name the dog will pay attention. It always responds to its name.

Hush: It is similar to know. But, the ‘hush command is a better choice. Hold the dog’s mouth shut and say hush or, sush.

Final Tips

Consistency is the key to success. You have to use the same signal for the same command always. It is a good idea to start with the basic things and then try the advanced ones. A common mistake is repetition. Never repeat the same command twice at the same time, it actually confuses the dog. Thus, dog training techniques work better.
